Slovenia is home to the world's oldest grapevine, which means winegrowing and winemaking long predate that of more well-known European countries. It's a country steeped in history and tradition. Today Slovenia has over 28,000 wineries and 22,300 hectares of vineyards across three main regions, Podravska, Posavska, and Primorska. About three-fourths of Slovenia's production is white wines, with most consumed domestically. Varieties include Istrian Malvasia, Furmint, Pinot Gris, Rebula, Zelén, Modra Frankinja (Blaufränkisch), Pinot Noir, Refošk, Teran, and Žametna Črnina.
