Wine production in Hungary dates back to Roman times. While most of the world knows its famous sweet wine – Tokaji Aszú – the country's 22 vastly diverse regions produce a variety of wines that include dry, off-dry, and sweet; whites and rosés; sparkling (traditional method, charmat, carbonated, and pét-nat); and reds that run the gamut from fresh and fruity to rich and age-worthy. Key varieties include Furmint, Hárslevelű, Juhfark, Olaszrizling, Kadarka, Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch), and Portugieser – as well as Bordeaux-style Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot.
