In honour of the 1956 memorial year, 150 bottles of Tokaji aszu are being rebottled in Tolcsva, Hungary.
Harvest in 1956 began on 22 October, the day before the Hungarian Uprising of 1956, and work continued during the revolution. The '56 vintage turned out to be an exceptional one.
1956 in Hungary
The Hungarian Revolution or Hungarian Uprising of 1956 was a nationwide revolt against the government of the Hungarian People's Republic and its Soviet-imposed policies, lasting from 23 October until 10 November 1956.
The revolt quickly spread across Hungary and the government collapsed. However, after announcing the willingness to negotiate a withdrawal of Soviet forces, the Politburo changed its mind and moved to crush the revolution. On 4 November, a large Soviet force invaded Budapest and other regions of the country. The Hungarian resistance continued until 10 November. Over 2500 Hungarian and 700 Soviet troops were killed in the conflict, and 200.000 Hungarians fled as refugees.
Public discussion about this revolution was suppressed in Hungary for more than 30 years, but since the thaw of the 1980s, it has been a subject of intense study and debate.
At the inauguration of the Third Hungarian Republic in 1989, 23 October was declared a national holiday.
To honour the 60th anniversary of the revolution, 150 bottles of Tokaji aszu specialities which are stored in the National Wine Depository in Tolcsva, underwent a rigorous inspection and examination process, got carefully filtered and stabilised and received a beautiful new 'dress' to celebrate in style.
The wines will represent Hungary at diplomatic events mainly, and won't be available to the masses - which is a shame, but understandable: From 150 bottles 124 bottles made it to the final round and received their new design.
Join us in celebrating this special occasion with a Special Wine Selection gift box from the Kardos Winery in Tokaj:
The box includes one bottle of Tokaj Dry, one bottle of Supreme, and one bottle of Tundermese, a late harvest sweet wine - a beautiful trio to represent Tokaj on this great occasion.
