August 20th - Hungary’s National Day

August 20, 2016

Hungary’s national day celebrates St Stephen, the country’s founding king.

The festivities begin with the raising of the national flag on Kossuth tér and finish with stunning fireworks over the Chain Bridge in the evening. The scenery is spectacular, so everyone reserves places well in advance at riverside restaurants, panoramic hotels and cruise boats. During the day, there are commemorations, military parades and flight and skydiving demonstrations.

Each year, a special cake is prepared to celebrate the country’s foundation, for which the National Guild of Hungarian Confectioners selects the best recipe submitted by confectioners from all over the country.

This year, the winner is the Green Gold of Őrség Cake - a beautiful cake with red raspberry jelly, white chocolate ganache and green sponge, representing Hungary’s national colours. (The sponge’s green colour comes from the “Green Gold of Őrség”, which refers to cold-pressed pumpkin seed oil that is made in the Őrség, a Hungarian region in the South-West.)

Whilst Hungary is celebrating its national day, we’re also celebrating here at Danube Wines:

There’s no better day to re-launch our website and blog after a bit of silence. We hope you’ll find the new website informative and the webshop easy to use.

There’s no celebration without a beautiful bottle of Hungarian wine, so we asked Gyorgy to tell us what he would recommend on this special day. Here is what he had to say:

Well, first of all, it’s Hungary’s National Day, so I’m going to choose a wine from - you guessed it - Tokaj, the historical wine region Hungary is rightly most famous for.

On the other hand, I’m taking into consideration that whether we like it or not, autumn is approaching: The evenings are starting to get cooler and we all notice that it’s getting dark a little earlier compared to July.

Therefore, I’d recommend Tokaj Dry 2015 from the Kardos Winery, which is a beautiful blend of Tokaj’s grape varieties. It’s a crisp, dry white with sweet fruit aromas of apple, pear (representing autumn) and citrus (a summer fruit), just the right combination for a cool summer evening.

I hope you’ll enjoy it!

The Tokaj Dry 2015 is available in the webshop through this link.
